Data Analysis, Process Charting and Auto Cad

Good business decisions need good information. The type of information required for example for a business process improvement project, may include:

Spreadsheets
Databases
Pivot Tables
Process / flow charts

It is important to take raw data and convert it to information. For example a list of orders taken over a specific time is data, a chart of profit per order or notes on why orders were lost is information.

In the case of a team working on improving a business process, a clear process chart is critical if a team is to succeed. You need to get a clear picture of what exactly happens - not what should or did happen, but what actually happens before you can improve. Good techniques for finding out what actually happens in a process include brain storming and charting using post its and a white wall / sheet of paper.

If the team are working in a factory or warehouse environment an AutoCad layout of the area is helpful. For example clarifying what you need to do in a Kaizen exercise, working out how far employees travel to get essential supplies, moving equipment and designing layouts all can be aided by AutoCad.
